Save energy at home by using these tips!

Energy can be saved by taking simple measures like reassessing how much you need to use appliances, insulating your homes, etc. Small steps will go a long way in bringing down your high energy bills, improve comfort, prevent power shortages and help reduce strain on the environment and preserve the earth's energy resources. Here are some easy-to-implement, effective tips to save energy:

• Switch appliances off when you are not using them such as lights, fans, TVs, entertainment systems and your computer. Devices with plugs should be unplugged when not used.

• Use appliances such as refrigerator, washer, air conditioner, or other appliances with ENERGY STAR® models instead of using inefficient appliances that consume more energy.

• Clean the coils of your refrigerator regularly and don’t set the temperature too low. Also, defrost a manual-defrost refrigerator regularly whenever ice builds up. Ice build-up reduces the energy efficiency of the appliance.

• Check your central heating and cooling duct system for leaks. Sealing and insulating air ducts can greatly increase the efficiency of your system.

• Stick to short period showers. You’ll save water, energy as well as money.

• Wrap your water heater with a water heater blanket to prevent it from losing heat.

• Insulate your walls with injected foam insulation to prevent hot air outside from seeping through porous block walls.

• Avoid too much use of heat-producing appliances like the oven, dishwasher, clothes washer and dryer, instead, air dry clothes or dishes. Use small electric cooking appliances like portable grills and skillets for small meals rather than an oven.

• Run your washing machine on full loads.

• Avoid pre-rinsing the dishes in hot water, but scrape the dishes before they go in the dishwasher. This will save water and energy.

• Use closed vessels, pressure cooker or right sized pan for cooking. This will consume less energy.

• Turn down your thermostat at night or when you’re away from home for a long time during the day. However, do not turn off the thermostat completely as this may lead to freezing of pipes.

• Clean or replace the A/C Filter. If the filter is dirty, it will force your air conditioner to work harder, thereby consuming more energy and money.
